Huon Pebbles

Well it’s 2011, and like the beginning of most years I take the time with my Grandparents to visit the Brookside Cherry farm in Judbury followed by a trip in the southern forests, past the old family camping grounds on the Huon River.

This trip saw us stop at the Huon River at Southwood, the bridge abutment burying what was the old camp ground, look around the lower Arve River before having Lunch at Glover’s Bluff and returning home.

This trip was different from many of the others in that for once the River was at a summer level as opposed to flood, which also meant the sun was out and the river was moving slow for the most part. This gave me the opportunity to take some photo of the rocks in the shallows that make the river. When dry, the rocks are not terribly exciting, but with the tannin-stained water of the river they take on various rich colours.

This past long weekend I had the pleasure of going out with some friends to Mt Field National Park for the day. Was was also an excellent opportunity to meet Amy, a fellow photographer who does extraordinary things with her mobile phone.

This is quickly becoming a regular destination for me given that it is not all that far away to drive and theres a lot of interesting scenery along the way. The trip took me around my usual circuit – National Park via New Norfolk in the morning, and then home via Lake Meadowbank in the evening.

Unfortunately I haven’t had a lot of time to play with my camera of late, and it does show in my photos. Many of them suffered compositional mistakes, issues with white balance and colour and focus. I’m surprised any photos came out at all.

One such example is the photo above – compositional error. Really should not have had the car on the bridge and what particularly annoyed me was that I did not reshoot the photo. I have no idea why I forgot.

There was only one image I took that day I was truly happy with – but I will leave that to Amy to show you.

Thanks to Anders, Tori, Tom, Caitlin, James, Leesha, Carly and of course Amy for the day.

Hope

Sunday, October 11th, 2009

This afternoon I made an impromptu visit in the Region of South Arm, Cremorne, Clifton Beach & Opossum Bay to check out some places to take photos. It has been the first time I have been done that far in about 15 years. Needless to say lots has changed. By the time I found Hope Beach it was pretty late in the day, I had to be “somewhere else” by a certain time, so I was somewhat rushed when taking photos. However now I know the potential for this Beach for coastal waterscapes, I will be returning soon.

Starter’s Box

For people who follow both myself, and some of my photographic colleagues, this photo may look strangely familiar. I’ve waited patiently for 2 weeks to get an opportunity to play with my newly acquired B+W110 Filter. Finally with the weather being suitable I went around to Bellerive and took some photos of the starter’s box belonging to the Bellerive Yacht Club. This one was my pick of the bunch, but I have learnt that as the light fades, the addition of this filter to my 10-20mm Sigma lens makes it VERY prone to vignetting.

Launceston Floods

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

I don’t normally try to take advantage of current events with old photography, but seeing there is such an interest I am going right ahead anyway. In the last week or so the Cataract Gorge in Launceston has been in flood as the Trevallyn Dam spills. This is always quite a spectacular site. These photos were taken a while ago now, but the impact remains the same.

Marriot Falls was the ultimate destination of my trip that went via Lake Meadowbank. The track to get there was a little different to what was advertised on other websites. The falls themselves are quite spectacular, and I believe moreso than the Russell Falls nearby. Unfortunately due to the higher than normal water flow due to recent rains, I was unable to get as close as I would have liked, and as a result the photo has been obscured by trees.

Track notes for those interested can be found here.

Lake Meadowbank

Lake Meadowbank is formed by the Meadowbank Hydro development, and is the most downstream of all the power stations on the Derwent scheme. The upper reaches of the lake is quite shallow, and the area photographed has been known to be dry under exceptional summer conditions. Just out of picture is a causeway and single lane bridge, which makes a spectacular crossing on the way to Ellendale & National Park. Grad ND8 + CPF Filters used.

Trial Harbour is located on the west coat of Tasmania, and as such is subjected to the full force of the Southern Ocean. As the name suggests, this was once considered a safe haven for visiting ships, though by the photo above I could never understand how.

Raindrop on Maple

Raindrop on Maple

I think this would have to be close to the wettest couple of weeks we have had for some time. I have been completely unable to tend to the garden because everything is saturated. This morning however I did go outside to have a a play with capturing raindrops on plants. I am happy with this result.
