Cape Deslacs is a favourite spot of a good photo buddy, Alex Wise.I decided to pay the place a visit the other week with the idea of trying to capture motion in the surf with a strong backdrop. Cape Deslacs can be found at the eastern end of Clifton Beach (webcam). Whilst I really like the colours of the surf, sand and sky, the cape itself is lit a bit harshly – I was still a little too early for the true “golden hour“. However I will be heading back again in the near future to redo the photo.

For people who follow both myself, and some of my photographic colleagues, this photo may look strangely familiar. I’ve waited patiently for 2 weeks to get an opportunity to play with my newly acquired B+W110 Filter. Finally with the weather being suitable I went around to Bellerive and took some photos of the starter’s box belonging to the Bellerive Yacht Club. This one was my pick of the bunch, but I have learnt that as the light fades, the addition of this filter to my 10-20mm Sigma lens makes it VERY prone to vignetting.

A couple of months back, when I first started this site, I posted about Strickland Falls. What I had not realised was that I had not truly seen them, and they were further upstream. I have been there half a dozen times since, and every time been stymied but the water being too high to successfully cross the creek with camera gear to shoot the falls proper. This all changed this weekend and armed with gumboots and back camera kit, I finally got the photos I was seeking. More photos after the break.

This was taken around this time last year. I really like it for the colours in the image, and I think the adjustments made in the image was what drove me to buying Aperture. This photo is of the fountain located in Salamanca Square on the waterfront in Hobart.

This is something I have not seen before. Silver Falls, with a “real” amount of water coming over them. Silver falls is part of the Hobart Water supply, so as such the fun police have restricted access upstream of it. The water is then channelled down canals into small reservoirs before making its way via pipe to the Hobart “Waterworks”. Read the rest of the story to see an image of how the Falls usually look.

Tools of the Trade – Cokin System & ND Filters

Today I’m going to talk about what are my tools of the trade. These are the bits and pieces I use when taking landscape photos such as lenses, tripods, or in the case of today, the Cokin System.

I am a really big fan of the Cokin Creative System. For the amateur photographer it makes buying filters cheap. How so? Well its made up of three components – the lens ring adaptor (which you cannot see) that screws into the front of your lens, the filter holder, and then the filters. What makes this so cheap?
