Dekadence Near the finish

One of the great things about Christmas time in Hobart is when all the ocean racing boats sail in for the Sydney-Hobart Yacht Race. It is sad that these days a lot of the faster boats turn around and head back to Sydney within hours to participate in the Sydney-Coffs Harbour Race, which happens early in the new year.

If they don’t head back, then there is usually a good chance they will participate in the King of the Derwent Yacht Race held usually around the 2nd January each year.

This year I had the pleasure of watching the event from the deck of the Cartela, giving me plenty of opportunity to take some photos.

There are a selection of images I have taken of the event. Please click on the image for a larger version.

As a follow up from the video earlier in the week, and the publicity from the Mercury website, It’s now time to post the series of the repulse dam images. It was a fun day driving around the upper Derwent Valley in an attempt to get some good flood photos. More photos after the break

Lake Meadowbank is formed by the Meadowbank Hydro development, and is the most downstream of all the power stations on the Derwent scheme. The upper reaches of the lake is quite shallow, and the area photographed has been known to be dry under exceptional summer conditions. Just out of picture is a causeway and single lane bridge, which makes a spectacular crossing on the way to Ellendale & National Park. Grad ND8 + CPF Filters used.

If it’s one thing about Hobart in Autumn, it’s that it can put on a great sunset. A few days prior to this photo I made the mistake of not travelling with my photo gear and missed out on a great photo. This particular day I did have my gear with me, on my way home nearing dusk, and this time decided that no, I would set up my gear and wait around for the shot. This was the best shot out of the several dozen taken.

Morning Reflections on Derwent River

Over the next week or so I will be sharing photos taken from a recent photo expedition that saw me head to New Norfolk then along the western side of the Derwent River to Mt Field and back home again crossing Lake Meadowbank at the causeway. This above picture was one of the first photos for the day and as you can see the fog had not quite lifted. I had hoped to come back again later in the afternoon to take the image again, but unfortunately there was not enough time left in the day.
