2011 Year in Review

This year has seen me significantly wind back my photographic activities as I found myself spread across too many interests.

The year was kicked off by a trip along the upper Huon River via Judbury. This is rapidly becoming a tradition.

February was a flurry of activity with the Hobart Regatta and Wooden Boat Festival. This was followed by visiting Bonorong Park in March and a trip to Bruny Island to act as a tourist guide.

April saw the Autumn Festival in New Norfolk, and I got interested in taking long exposure photos of planes at night. Sometimes the photos didn’t come out as I wanted. This was also the first year that I had attended an ANZAC Day march and service.

I visited Bonorong Park again, but it took until June to get the photos up. I finally managed to get a good photo of the Russell Falls at Mt field and reflected on a conversation I had about whether a photo location causes IP infringement.

All of this though paled in comparison to highlight of the year – a 2 week trip to Taiwan. I took heaps of photos but they were mainly on my iPhone as I quickly found the heat of summer to hot to carry around photo gear. I did however get some nice photos of sunsets and light domes.

After getting back, I slowed down a lot. With all the new photos, I was having trouble organising them on my iDevices, so optimised my Aperture library for iDevices.

There have been a couple of things I have been to, including the RTBG Spring Festival and a trip to Lake Pedder that took me past the Sentinel Ranges, but some of the other photos I just haven’t had time to upload.

So that was the year that was. Happy Christmas and a safe new year to all, and I’ll catch you next year.

Location Rip Off?

Copyright?

The other day I had a short Twitter conversation with that amazing Tasmanian long exposure photographer Alex Wise. Alex was expressing his frustration at how someone had asked him about where he took his photos and then proceeded to visit the sites the make the same photo.

I responded by saying that you cannot copyright a location, otherwise all photographers should give up now for risk of copying another photographer. Alex countered by saying that people should at least bring their own creativity to the location instead of trying to make an exact copy. It’s true and I agree with that too.

Indeed, it was Alex’s photos of Cape DeSlacs that caused my visits to this location and recently another photographer I know recently took a photo in the exact same spot as my photo of Strickland Falls.

However, I hope as was the case for me, that seeing other people’s photos and going to the location is due to inspiration and not replication. I think it all comes down to the intention of the photo you are taking.

Is it unethical to rip off a location if you have asked the photographer where they took the photo and you attempt to repeat it in an attempt to sell it? Most definitely. But if you just want a happy snap, or some art for your wall I really cannot see the harm in it. You’ll never repeat the photo taken by the photographer, because you weren’t at that spot at the same time.

However by ripping off a photo you are only ripping off yourself. As Alex says, be creative with your photo. It’ll mean more to you knowing it is yours.

HPS Exhibition

The Opening

Every year the highlight for the Hobart Photographic Society is to hold their annual exhibition. This year is no different and the Exhibition was opened on Monday night by his Excellency, the Governor of Tasmania.

The great thing about an exhibition like this is you get to see what photos other people are taking. This year there was some very notable portrait and macro photography. I am leaning more and more into wanting to take macro photography and seeing what can be done is truly exciting.

The exhibition is being held at the Pavilion in Mawson Place, Hobart and will run for 2 weeks ending February 14. The Pavilion will be open between 10am – 6pm.

This exhibition marks 1 years since I became aware of the photographic society and became interested in joining. I happened to wander in on it on a lunch break after seeing an sign outside and then obtained some further information from the friendly chap watching over things.

Mounted Print - Photo by Iain Best

Mounted Print - Photo by Iain Best

Shortly after I posted about my shopfront on RedBubble, Someone who I have known on again and off again over the years purchased a few of my images as mounted prints.

Today Iain’s images arrived, and he has written a post about them on his blog. I immediately contacted Iain and quizzed him on his thoughts about the print quality, size of the large images, and value for money. You can read about what his thoughts are on his blog.

He has also posted an image on RedBubble of all the prints under his 50″ TV. The TV completely dwarfs the large sized images :)

Thanks Iain for being my first customer and the prints look great!

The weather hasn’t been particularly kind for photography these last few weeks, so it has given me to opportunity to set up a store for selling some of my favourite works. You can now purchase my prints through Red Bubble.

The way Red Bubble works is I provide them with my images and they provide a shopfront for my work (see screenshot) allowing me to sell in a variety of formats. They then handle all the payment, printing and postage and I receive a percentage of the sale price.

But what is important for you to know is that I think the quality of their images are great. Before deciding to sell with them, I purchased one of my prints in a large format to test the quality. When it arrived I was very happy with the end product, therefore I have no hesitation in offering my work for sale through them.

Where can you go to get these prints?

And, if there is something of mine not available that you would like please Contact Me with details and I will make it available for purchase.

Learning Links

Monday, September 21st, 2009

Today I thought I would share some of other websites I frequent regularly for researching photography:

The Photo Forum
This is probably one of the biggest photography forums online,  but has a wealth of information from many beginners, amatuers  and professional photographers. What’s not to like.

AusPhotography
Another photography forum, but more for Australians.

Bushwalking Tasmania
What a fantastic site. An absolute wealth of information about the Tasmanian bush, track notes, and everything you need to know about bushwalking from a day trip to a multi day trail.

Flickr
I think one of the most underrated things flickr has going for it are their community groups. They can provide an absolute wealth of knowledge on highly specialised areas, such as long exposures, or a particular lens.

PhotoFocus
Many people who listen to photography podcasts will know about Photofocus. Hosted by Scott Bourne and Rock “RAW” Sammon, this is a straight out Q&A Podcast that provides all sorts of useful information to people learning about photography.

Thats your lot for this month! I hope to make this a somewhat regular post.
