This was taken around this time last year. I really like it for the colours in the image, and I think the adjustments made in the image was what drove me to buying Aperture. This photo is of the fountain located in Salamanca Square on the waterfront in Hobart.

Social networks are all the rage these days. They cover information (Facebook and Twitter), video (Youtube) as well as photography (Flickr). When trying to increase traffic to a new photography website though, are social networks the answer?
Sort of.
It has been about a month since I started this website. One of the things I do when I create new posts is use my social networks to advertise this fact. The idea being that someone will be interested in the post and follow the link I provide. From the image to the right, you can see that significant portion of my traffic is referred from various social networks.

The summit of Mount Wellington has the fantastic mix of alpine scrub and many vivid colours. However in winter, a lot of the colour is hidden by deep snowdrifts. Somehow a friend of mind convinced me that I wanted to go up the Mountain, in the snow, at 6am in the morning to take photos.
Of the photos I took, this was the one I liked the most. with a bit of a crop, and some adjustments, I feel this really did catch the mood of the morning.

Raindrop on Maple
I think this would have to be close to the wettest couple of weeks we have had for some time. I have been completely unable to tend to the garden because everything is saturated. This morning however I did go outside to have a a play with capturing raindrops on plants. I am happy with this result.

Reflections - Lindisfarne
By far the best time to be taking photos of water when you want reflections in Tasmania is autumn and early winter. By the time spring comes around again, the wind is usually prevailing from the north with a sea breeze in the afternoon and through to night. This photo was taken a few years back now in autumn, and I am always thrilled by how glass-like the water was on this day.

Mount Dawson
Something a little different today. This is a photo of Mount Dawson in south-west Tasmania, as seen while driving along the lower Florentine forestry roads. I have posted this because it’s a monochrome, and works as a monochrome. I particularly like the textures in the sky. Monochrome photography is a great way to set a mood for an image.

This is something I have not seen before. Silver Falls, with a “real” amount of water coming over them. Silver falls is part of the Hobart Water supply, so as such the fun police have restricted access upstream of it. The water is then channelled down canals into small reservoirs before making its way via pipe to the Hobart “Waterworks”. Read the rest of the story to see an image of how the Falls usually look.

I guess it’s becoming noticeable that I particularly like taking photos of waterfalls. It has been raining for 3 days here, so I have taken the opportunity to go out and take some photos of local waterfalls while there is some water around. This one is of Strickland falls, nearby Fern Tree. Its hard to imagine that this is maybe 15 seconds walk from a major road in the area, Strickland Avenue.

Today I’m going to talk about what are my tools of the trade. These are the bits and pieces I use when taking landscape photos such as lenses, tripods, or in the case of today, the Cokin System.
I am a really big fan of the Cokin Creative System. For the amateur photographer it makes buying filters cheap. How so? Well its made up of three components – the lens ring adaptor (which you cannot see) that screws into the front of your lens, the filter holder, and then the filters. What makes this so cheap?
