If it’s one thing about Hobart in Autumn, it’s that it can put on a great sunset. A few days prior to this photo I made the mistake of not travelling with my photo gear and missed out on a great photo. This particular day I did have my gear with me, on my way home nearing dusk, and this time decided that no, I would set up my gear and wait around for the shot. This was the best shot out of the several dozen taken.

While walking down to the Lady Barren Falls, I happened across the fungus that was growing amongst the masses of moss growing beside the path. What I found interesting was how to fungus grew – it started out  a crimson red, and then as it matured changed colour from red to orange to a vivid yellow.

Lady Barren Falls

I have to admit, I am not particularly fond of this photo, mainly because there was nowhere to compose the photo other than a small platform built by the Parks and Wildlife Service, which had a tree overgrowing the more interesting aspects of the falls. There is definitely a lot more water flowing over this waterfall than there is over the Horse Shoe Falls & Russell Falls. Did I mention the 1 hour round trip is quite a hike?

When most people visit Mt Field, the main attraction in the Russell Falls. but with the lack of sustained rain, I feel that these falls are quite underwhelming. Instead I took photos of the two other major waterfalls in the park, the Horse Shoe (Pictured) and Lady Barren (Tomorrow’s photo) Falls.

The walk along the track to the Russell falls is a photo experience in itself. Rich with ancient ferns and shrubs this is a prime example of temperate rainforest. I happened across this wonderful example early into the walk.

End of the Line - Westbury Station

Though not strictly the last stop on the Maydena line, the Westerway station is one of  last intact railway stations on this line. The rail line, known as the great western was built in the early 1900s to assist with mining & forestry operations in the area, with plans to extend the railhead as far as Macquarie Harbour. However with modern transport demand fell away for the rail service and eventually the line was closed past New Norfolk in 1995. It is hoped that one day a steam locomotives that were popular will travel this line once more to Mt Field.

Morning Reflections on Derwent River

Over the next week or so I will be sharing photos taken from a recent photo expedition that saw me head to New Norfolk then along the western side of the Derwent River to Mt Field and back home again crossing Lake Meadowbank at the causeway. This above picture was one of the first photos for the day and as you can see the fog had not quite lifted. I had hoped to come back again later in the afternoon to take the image again, but unfortunately there was not enough time left in the day.
